8. L.A. Noire - Embrace Being A Dick

LA Noire
Rockstar

One of the biggest complaints L.A. Noire received when it first came out was that its lead character, Cole Phelps, would constantly fly off the handle during interrogations when you didn't want him to. However, despite leaving it up to players to navigate through conversations themselves, Rockstar's open world game never let them tailor Cole's personality like a regular RPG would.

The different dialogue options were there to implicate suspects and solve a puzzle, rather than create your own story, meaning simply "doubting" a claim a person of interest made could result in the detective completely flipping out and insulting them, because that's who he is.

It's a bit jarring, but you're not necessarily supposed to like Cole, and you're clearly not in charge of him, as a major plot point shows him having an affair even you aren't told about until the information is leaked to the press.

He's not an avatar for the player but a complex noir throwback that's a little too hotheaded, and if you embrace that, it's easier to go along with his violent outbursts and uptight behaviour.
