10 Potential Superhero Video Games (And Who Should Make Them)

1. The Hulk: Avalanche Studios

Do any of you guys remember a lil' old game called The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction? It was dead fun, and really just existed for the sole purpose of letting players cut loose as the world's angriest green blob. It remains today by far the greatest Hulk game (not that that's saying much), and laid the basis for a number of games in the mid-to-late 2000s, namely Prototype and its sequel.

Anyone who's had the pleasant experience of dropping into a Just Cause game will know that Avalanche are the premier custodians of massive destruction, and that they're actually pretty handy when it comes to dabbling in a license or two. Given that they're so in-tune with letting players blow-up lots of things on a whim, it makes sense that they'd be a prime candidate for a Hulk title. Heck, I'd even go as far as to say that they'd be great at nailing the duality of the character, with the potential for less green, more Banner-oriented levels remaining high as a way of breaking-up gameplay between action set-pieces.

And hey, if they're not too keen on tackling Marvel's analogue for atomic warfare, there are always more characters that they could do. Indeed, based on the studio's prior work on Mad Max, a vehicle-oriented, heavy-metal themed approach to Ghost Rider would be just as good (or even better, if we got to do this).

Regardless of how Spidey and the Avengers turn out on console, it's pretty much a given that we're going to be seeing way more superhero titles down the line. And while we're all infinitely optimistic regarding the medium's other licensed efforts (particularly so in Star Wars' case), it remains to be seen how much quality we'll be getting with our costumed capers. Given the right treatment, however, superheroes could absolutely take the medium by storm. Here's hoping that they'll be following Arkham's lead.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
