Nier: Automata has a weird relationship with endings. In total, there are 26 different ways you can close the game out, from meaningful resolutions to eating the wrong kind of fish and being poisoned. Ending E is consider the game's "proper" ending, however, which sees the protagonists dead after completing their mission.

Players are then given an option to save and revive them, thrown into a bullet hell mini-game they need to complete if they say yes. The sequence itself is unfathomably difficult, as you're tasked to fight the credits of the people who worked on the game, with the whole ordeal quickly becoming overwhelming.

Then you're given another choice of accepting help, which takes the form of the gamertags of other players who have completed the game. If you accept, you fight alongside them, seeing some names fade away as they're caught in the crossfire, but ultimately making the battle that much more triumphant as the brilliant score swells.

You're still not done though, and when you complete the segment and the happy ending is in sight, you're given yet another choice: delete all of your saved progress and join the ranks as a gamertag to help others finish the game, or keep your progress and not honor the "deaths" of the people who helped you.

No matter which option you choose, the revelation that other people have sacrificed their own saves to help you is accomplished by using the unique possibilities of video games as a medium, and it's amazing.
