Bioshock crops up a lot for two main things: its infamous, mind-blowing twist and its incredibly weak final boss fight.

Instead, let's take it back. Back to the very start, to the flaming plane wreckage of an intro.

That's not a metaphor, you literally start in the aftermath of an aeroplane. But that's not the chilling bit, it's what comes next that gives us the willies.

The ominous lighthouse, that slow descent into an the underwater utopia...

It looks magnificent, until you dock. No one around, the writing [literally] on the walls, something's not right here.

This societal paradise is not all it's cracked up to be, and it's not long until we discover what went wrong. But that opening, that unknowing fall into Rapture, that sense of dread that rises up the back of throats, that was a new one.

Bioshock may be more action than horror title, but you wouldn't know that from the opening. It sets up a fallen kingdom perfectly, always putting you on edge as you explore the ruins.
