10 Problems With Pokémon Gold & Silver Nobody Wants To Admit
5. An Over Reliance On Original Pokémon
No. No I don't care if they are the classic creatures, and I certainly don't care if you think that the originals are the best and nothing can top them. New games and new regions lend themselves to showcasing the new Pokémon, not passing off the original creations with a few tweaks and offering them to us like a fresh experience. That's the Force Awakens approach to things. I recently completed a run in HeartGold where my only Johto Pokémon was my starter, and I did not even blink. That's a problem.
Balancing old and new Pokémon in a game is a tricky situation. X & Y featured very few new Pokemon, and on the opposite end Black & White had nothing but. Where Gold & Silver stumbled was secluding new creations to niche areas, whilst original Pokémon would constantly pop up all over the map.
Now a lot of Pokémon did come back better and stronger, and I will admit some of them were elusive in Red & Blue and easily getting to them this time around was a bit of fun. But the focus should not have been on reworking the classics; making the new Pokemon available should have been. Burn through the new hundred during the Johto portion of the game with some splashings of originals and save the rest for Kanto to really fill up that area and turn the nostalgia on to overdrive.
