Est. Sales So Far: $12 million

Say what you will about Hellblade's rather laborious story and repetitive puzzles - it's besides the point. Rather, Ninja Theory proved that by striking a solid middle ground between budget and aesthetic, they could almost release a "Double A" game - something that can hang with the Uncharteds of the world graphically, allowing for a more interpretational, weighty narrative and retailing for only $30.

Such a recipe was clearly recognised by the masses too, as though Ninja Theory noted the game only needed to shift 300,000 copies to recoup its budget, SteamSpy alone shows that the PC version has managed 193,000.

Then factor in that Hellblade topped the PS4 sales chart for August, beating out Uncharted: Lost Legacy to claim the top spot. Sadly, Sony don't divulge their particular units shipped, but rest assured they'll be at least quadruple that Steam figure, being the install base on PS4 is around 60 million owners.

It may not be for everyone, but as a bastion of how and why single player games can exist in these tumultuous times, it's perfect.
