10 Promising Video Game Movies That ALMOST Happened
4. Omnimusha
Capcom took the took Resident Evil's survival horror gameplay and transposed it into a Samurai-era Japan full of dark fantasy creatures. The results was the excellent Onimusha: Warlords.
Coming hot off Silent Hill (2006), the distinctively visual filmmaker Christophe Gans and his producer Samuel Hadida, both chose Omnismush as there next game-to-film project.
Landing a 70 million budget, locations in China and Asian A-listerTakeshi Kaneshiro reprising his role of game character Samanoske - things looked good to go for a 2008 shooting date.
What Happened?
The film was initially delayed due to Heath Ledger's passing - Hadida was a producer on Ledger film The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus, and the turmoil of that production delayed Onimusha.
The ripple effect was that the set cast and crew had to land other gigs in the meanwhile, with the production getting pushed back and eventually collapsing due to scheduling logistics.
Why Was It Promising?
Gans is underrated helmer who is pitch-perfect at creating distinct worlds on the big screen. He's also strong in Eastern-garnished action and grisly horror, not to mention is a manic gamer - all certified traits to have made this into a worthy adaptation of this franchise.
