10 Promising Video Game Movies That ALMOST Happened

3. Resident Evil (Romero Version)

The Resident Evil series created the 'Survival Horror' genre and made zombies a mainstay in the medium from the early top-down titles classics through its mid-rough-patches, to its recent renaissance.

Of course, a movie version happened in 2002 to mixed (yet financial successful) results - but a much more promising inception was in development before, spearheaded by non-other then Night Of The Living Dead director George Romero.

After the filmmaker directed a Japanese TV commercial for Resident Evil 2's release, Sony pictures hired Romero to create a film adaptation of the first game.

What Happened?

Romero handed in his script, Capcom didn't like it and he was fired - ouch.

Since then, his early draft has since emerged online with it revealing to be a superior product compared to the resulting film. Not to mention, it was faithfully ingrained with the games DNA - with it even featuring zombie sharks, giant snakes and those killer plants!

Why Was It Promising?

Romero making a giant scale zombie movie based on a classic game title; what's not to like? The director was literally the best choice for a Resident Evil movie and it would have been amazing to see what he could've done with a healthy budget and a popcorn aesthetic.
