One of the more underrated members of Nintendo's library, the Pikmin series made its debut on the Nintendo GameCube in 2001. It represents the company's own brand of strategy game as Captain Olimar uses the diminutive plant creatures to reach the safety of his rocket ship.

The first two games proved to be cult hits on the purple lunchbox and would later be ported to the Wii in 2009. For the third numbered entry, the series jumped to the Wii U with mostly positive results. The next entry in the series hasn't arrived.

Pikmin 4 was first heard of in 2015, in which creator Shigeru Miyamoto said the new game was close to completion. However, the Nintendo Wii U was struggling at the time and the company was laying the groundwork for the Switch. At this point, development efforts were refocused on "Hey Pikmin!", a smaller scale release for the Nintendo 3DS in 2017.

As for Pikmin 4, no further details have been shared. With the amount of success Zelda and Mario have seen on Nintendo's hybrid console, there's no reason why Pikmin couldn't make its own comeback on the system. Pikmin 3 deluxe was put out in October 2020, but a fourth game in the series remains illusive.
