10 PS1 Games That Completely Messed With Your Mind
9. LSD: Dream Emulator
Look at that face. Just look at that face.
LSD: Dream Emulator is an experience best described as a playable dream, with characters and themes pulled from a dream diary and recreated in all its 32-bit glory. The game strays as far from a linear narrative as possible, with the main aim simply being exploration across the areas of the game, starting from a random location. These 10 minute free-roaming segments, known as dreams, are characterised by interchangeable psychedelic themes, characters and locations.
Creator Osamu Sato is a multimedia artist, and viewed the PlayStation as a platform not for gaming, but a powerful vehicle for contemporary art and music. Sato himself noted his frustration with the limitations of traditional games of the era, with players not being able to go out of bounds and having to develop very specific skills to progress in the game. Dream Emulator is a rejection of this, deliberately appealing to low skill players and non-traditional gamers.
