Wipeout is an anti-gravity racing game set in 2052, but manages to capture the essence of mid-'90s club culture. Its soundtrack was perfect to ride the wave of the evolving sound of electronic music at the time, with European versions featuring contributions from the likes of Orbital and The Chemical Brothers. The game also came with a controversial poster advertising campaign featuring DJ Sara Cox and some quite on-the-nose drug references, although the game's designers would later distance themselves from any such overt allusions.

The futuristic racer was instrumental in the evolution of music in gaming, increasing the appeal of video game soundtracks to mainstream artists and demonstrating the importance of synergy between a gameplay and the audio accompanying it. Building on the legacy of the F-Zero games, Wipeout's ground-breaking sense of speed and momentum allied with its techno soundtrack and snaking 3D tracks created an multi-layered sensory experience that players had not been exposed to before.
