4. Post-Apocalyptic Pikmin
For a time, there was some question of where the Pikmin games took place. Earth seemed the most likely culprit, of course, given the nature of some of the scenery and items found there (not the least of which include batteries and 7up bottle caps). Even then, though, that left a question of when. Do they take place in the modern day, or sometime else? Series creator Shigeru Miyamoto, according to a quote which has become all but lost to time, apparently said early on that it does indeed take place on planet Earth. Not only that, but it does so at some point following the extinction of the human race. It's easy enough to see how that might be, as well as a little heavy to imagine a cheerful little series such as this taking place well after you and everyone you've ever known and loved- and everyone else on the planet- is long dead. Fitting in the final piece about the planet, now designated as PNF-404, is the map of the world itself revealed in Pikmin 3. As demonstrated by the folks at
Gamnesia, the visual of the southern hemisphere greatly resembles that of Pangaea Ultima, which is a scientific hypothesis of how the world might look in 250 million years.
