10 Rare Video Game Console Variants You Might Actually Own

6. Yellow Sega Game Gear

Sega never really had much joy in the handheld market, with the Game Gear and Pico (remember that?) their only two entries in the portable market.

Positioned as a technologically superior product to an obscure little machine called the Game Boy, the Game Gear nevertheless failed to break Nintendo's stranglehold on the portable gaming market in the early nineties.

While the standard model was black, there were a number of colour variations released throughout the Game Gear's lifespan until its inevitable discontinuation in 1997.

Of these variants, the Japan exclusive yellow Game Gear is perhaps the rarest.

Whilst it was officially released in Japan only, it is thought that up to fifty thousand of these brightly coloured units were released in total, and their region free architecture made it a prime candidate for western importers.

Those fortunate enough to count this banana yellow model among their collection will no doubt deem today's prices virtually unrecognisable when compared to their own outlay for the system.

It is not uncommon for certifiably tested and working systems to command fees of up to five or six hundred pounds sterling / US dollars when purchased through major online sale and auction sites, with matching yellow accessories rarer than an adult in a Fortnite lobby.
