6. 'Those Games Are Doing Nothing For Your Confidence'
Remember charging around as part of a gang when you were a child? Clans and guilds are essentially just a progression of that for people with incomes. There's something really satisfying about succeeding against the odds in a tough raid with people who start as faceless usernames and gradually become close friends. Celebrating with an alcoholic beverage of choice in their company is just the icing on the cake. From a niche perspective it's also worth noting that gaming gives people with chronic illnesses the chance to engage with other people on an equal level. It sounds odd, but the chance to engage with people on an equal level in online gaming is a huge confidence boost - no insensitive remarks about facial rashes or exasperated comments when we have to rest, all anyone needs to know is we're pretty handy with a sniper rifle when we need to be. Single player games can be even better if our reaction times have been slowed down by joints so wooden they could pass for being Kristen Stewart's acting career. Any positive gain is pure placebo effect, but games can be a portal to sanity for the time we're able to play.
