10 Reasons Why The Original Dungeon Keeper Is Still Devilishly Awesome

8. Making Your Decisions Wisely

Although you are never actually challenged with a timer to complete levels within the game, the heroes in some of the maps will begin to dig towards your dungeon after a set amount of time. This means you have two options. You can either dedicate time to have your imps to mine out resources and train an army of minions in the Training Room ready for the ensuing battle, or you can sacrifice time to fortify the perimeters of your dungeon. These walls are impenetrable to the enemy and you're essentially walling yourself in, the heroes could be rallying together and calling in reinforcements. A fog of war envelops the realms you seek to conquer, meaning that with one incorrect gold tile mined or dirt tile excavated, you could find yourself overwhelmed by both goodly heroes or rival keepers, unless you use the Sight Of Evil spell which will drain your gold resources. This makes things more interesting as you begin to expand your dungeon and explore the map, you could find yourself on treacherous ground, heavy with unforeseen traps or enemy threats. Intensity builds at impressive rates as events slowly take form and escalate to a climactic battle you know is coming. This makes Dungeon Keeper a very compelling strategy game. At times the end goal can appear very linear, but when you hastily command your imps to dig forth a path, you could stumble directly into a cruel cavern of highly experienced fairies and have your workers and creatures lightning-fried in a matter of nanoseconds. But there are secrets and treasures to be equipped if a curious keeper strays from the beaten path.
