As fun as being a hero in Star Wars Battlefront is, however, stepping into the fray as a meagre grunt fighting for the Alliance or Empire is still the biggest thrill. Battlefront does a wonderful job of making you feel truly overwhelmed at times, meaning that your successes - no matter how fleeting they may be - are that much more rewarding.

So many Star Wars games have made a big deal out of centring all of their events around you, but in Battlefront you're nothing more than a pawn in something so much bigger. Wandering around the battlefield can be genuinely daunting, helping players to experience the darker undertones of the massive battles in the Star Wars universe.

Even in older games like Republic Commando where we got to control a team of elite soldiers, there was never really a sense that failure was an option. Controlling the makeshift heroes of that game was mostly a guaranteed success, but in Battlefront your odds of survival and glory are much, much worse.

Star Wars Battlefront would be somewhat terrifying if it weren't a Star Wars game, such is the massive unpredictability of its encounters.
