10 Reasons Super Mario World Is The Best 2D Mario Of All Time

9. A Brilliant Soundtrack

Nintendo have always been excellent at creating soundtracks for their games, with the Super Mario franchise always being amongst their very best. Everything about the retro games' music has become iconic and certain level songs from the first four games in the series have probably become more beloved over the years than most mainstream chart tunes from the time.

However, Super Mario World took the popularity of the original game's soundtrack and went out of its way to improve on it. Every level is given special treatment in regards to its backing sounds, with the music for a level often reflecting the environment that Mario is traversing.

The opening Dinosaur Island levels are fun and upbeat, the Ghost Houses are dark and creepy and the Fortresses really hammer home the feeling of suspense.

And what helps Super Mario World's soundtrack stand out from the crowd is just how original and exotic it all sounds. It apparently took composer Koji Kondo over a year and a half to get the soundtrack over the line and everything about the finished project sounds new and interesting.

New hardware and technologies meant that Super Mario World's soundtrack was the first to include eight sounds at once, leading to perhaps the most wild and wacky collection of songs to date.
