9. An Epic Overworld

For the most part, Legend of Zelda overworlds prior to Twilight Princess weren't really meant to be much more than a buffer between dungeons and occasional source of side quests. The Wind Waker tried for something a little greater but ended up frustrating many players by asking them to manage a cumbersome boat navigation system. Twilight Princess was different. Not only was its overworld an absolutely massive piece of real estate, but for the first time Nintendo actually made an effort to fill a Zelda games hub with a variety of interesting NPC characters and locales. Like never before, traversing the game's sizeable landscape actually felt like you were navigating a living, breathing fantasy world. While not up there with the world designs of the best open world games like Red Dead Redemption, in comparison to the rest of the Zelda franchise Twlight Princess is a true standout.
