This is the big one for zombie fans. Something that most major zombie games have an issue with is that when a zombie visibly bites your character, you won’t get infected with the zombie disease. Seeing Leon from Resident Evil shrug off 17 bites by eating a weed is kind of ridiculous when you find characters who get infected with a single chomp. It can be immersion breaking, and while it’s often for the best, it can be a common disappointment to most zombie fans.

That’s where Zomboid comes in. Each encounter with a zombie could be your last, as even a single zombie has the threat to end your run quickly. By default, a zombie attack can leave you with either a scratch, a laceration, or a bite. A scratch gives you a 7% chance that you’ll be infected with the zombie virus, a laceration is a 25% chance, and a bite will 100% turn you into part of the horde.

Infection isn’t immediate though, which can lead to situations where you think you’re fine only to figure out later that you’re going to die or strategize what you should do with your final hours before you become a green cannibal. Overall, this means you must be very careful with everything you do and adds a tension a lot of zombie games just don’t have.
