10 Reasons Why Quake Is The Hardest FPS Of All Time

Game tutorials are almost always utterly worthless and it is a surprise that any dev time is spent on them at all, if only to tick off a checkbox. Most of them treat you as if you have never touched a mouse and keyboard before and if they succeed at anything, it is giving you a rudimentary understanding of the game that you could probably have figured out for yourself within the first 30 seconds of playing.

However, in a game like Quake in this day and age a tutorial is absolutely vital and needs to do more than teach you how to use WASD. Unfortunately, the tutorial in Quake Champions falls utterly short in that regard. Indeed, instead of giving you the tools to succeed, it in fact sets you up to fail by showing you how to play an FPS game instead of showing you how to play Quake.

Key mechanics like circle and strafe jumping are completely omitted and even though it has you try out the different weapons, it does not explain how to use them properly. It can of course be argued that a new player does not need to know about different rocket jumping angles or a trick that allows you to get off a jump pad safely, but they should at least leave the tutorial with a basic understanding of the fundamentals of Quake. Unfortunately, this is not the case and you have to consult YouTube videos just to fill in the blanks.

In the Quake 'Game Guide', it says that 'the game is easy to pick up', which cannot be further from the truth.

Ever since I saw BJ grin as he picked up the chain gun in Wolfenstein 3D, I've been hooked on video games. My first love, however, was Counter-Strike 1.3 and I would beg my mom to take me to Internet cafés just so I could play it. The other two games that captured my heart were World of Warcraft and Quake, though I play all sorts of games (especially of the competitive multiplayer type). Oh, and I love dwarves and write fantasy stories about them in my free time.
