10 Reasons Why Quake Is The Hardest FPS Of All Time

The primary competitive mode is Duel, which pits two players against each other and puts everything that we have just covered to the test: your movement, aim, use of sound, map knowledge, and ability to time and control items. With no teammates to pick up your slack, you are truly on your own and will have no one to blame for losing but yourself. In today's finger-pointing culture, this can be a difficult pill to swallow, especially when you go 0-20.

These types of scores are not uncommon in Duel and can even go into the negatives, for Quake is all about momentum and once a player has established control on the map, it is not easy to wrest it back from them. But one of the golden rules of Quake is that 'it is not over until it's over' and there have been some amazing comebacks in pro play where a player will steal victory from the jaws of defeat with a spectacular railshot in the last microsecond.

Getting demolished in Quake is inevitable and every Quake player has felt its sting. Instead of ragequitting, however, they accept that that is part of the game and try to learn from their mistakes. A new player, on the other hand, could feel completely dejected as a result and lose all motivation to keep playing, and blamelessly so.

For this reason, the players that you find in Quake more often than not have a fierce passion for the game that keeps them playing despite the countless thrashings that they have endured.

Ever since I saw BJ grin as he picked up the chain gun in Wolfenstein 3D, I've been hooked on video games. My first love, however, was Counter-Strike 1.3 and I would beg my mom to take me to Internet cafés just so I could play it. The other two games that captured my heart were World of Warcraft and Quake, though I play all sorts of games (especially of the competitive multiplayer type). Oh, and I love dwarves and write fantasy stories about them in my free time.
