10 Reasons Why We Love DOOM
9. It Can Laugh At Its Own Expense
Helping to save themselves from falling into the chasms of pretentiousness, id Software have always displayed a talent for having a chuckle at their own expense. When Doom isn't horror, it's having a bit of a laugh, and we've laughed along with it.
Take for example, the classic Super Turbo Turkey Puncher 3 arcade machine, where your one and only objective was to punch hapless poultry to death. Or how about the secret message in the suitably terrifying Doom 3, where demons exchanged tips on candle arrangements for sacrificial rituals?
Doom 2016 however, was the franchise's biggest triumph in humour, as it's loaded with amusing references for those wise enough to find them, from fist-bumping the classic action figure, all the way to the thumbs-up Terminator inspired lava death.
It shows that, even though action and horror will always be at the forefront, the developers have always had enough interest, adventurousness and imagination to occasionally mock their own creation. It's this ability to not always be so serious that players and fans really get a kick out off.
