Ok, put down that “quality over quantity” emblazoned bat your holding.

We all know that a trip to the app store is going to throw up some less-than-stellar gaming examples, and shovelware is still an ever present bogeyman. A quick look at the numbers show that the iOS app store alone uploads upwards of 15,000 games a MONTH.

Consider the flip side of the coin - how many new game devs are getting their start in the big bad world of game making through the low(er) cost world of mobile gaming?

How many fresh-faced folks are learning to code using today’s simpler and freely available tools - and where will they be tomorrow? Setting up their own studios? Working on future AAA prospects? Yes, mobile gaming has a bloat problem, but we’re already seeing the industry grow in scale and quality.

We as consumers are becoming savvier; more accustomed to smartphones and apps and less likely to give time to shovelware. Mobile gaming is still young, but make no mistake - it is already serving the games industry as a whole, employing more devs, designers, techs etc., all carving out new ways to sustain video games’ very own future.

You may not personally derive any enjoyment out of the trashiest of mobile games, but to some folks, somewhere, that “Farm Sim X” game is a regular life fixture, bringing joy in five minute bursts and giving Mr. or Mrs. Farm Sim X developer their much needed start in the gaming industry.

Phoenix lives in the North East of England and gets paid to hide that fact in voiceovers. She's also a writer, a/v editor and someone who spends a frankly ridiculous amount of time gaming. She can't resist an amiibo. She will talk your ear off about videogames, wrestling, comics, bad films and My Little Pony.
