While 'Grand Theft Auto' and 'Online' are probably starting to feel like they go hand in hand, this was not always the case and the precedent had to start and be set somewhere. For that we need look no further than GTA IV's early version of the now iconic online mode to see how the origin was found. Offering console support for up to 16 players, this mode contained many of the game types that players have come to enjoy in the huge online community that exists today. Taking place within Liberty City, the mode also included a free mode and a team-based variation on this called party mode. This online addition looks a lot like the skeleton of GTA:Online without all of the meat and muscles added. Rockstar tested the waters with this - and a few others - before diving head first into a fully fledged online community with their latest game. Thanks, GTA IV!
