10 Reasons You're Wrong About Destiny

8. Combat Is Meticulously Crafted

This is the one thing every player has come away saying is the best thing about Destiny, and from the guys who brought us Halo you'd expect nothing less. There are similarities in terms of the way you can approach combat if you wish; such as a reliance on jumping constantly to avoid fire whilst having a finger constantly priming a grenade or melee attack if someone appears too close or too far. There's a definitive Call of Duty influence too in the whole 'double-trigger' setup of holding the left before firing with the right, as you'll take guys down extremely quickly if you can tag a headshot with the right weapon. If you're just jumping in now it's hard to escape 'that feeling' everybody has when starting out online and just feeling like they're the sacrificial lamb attempting to navigate the slaughter - only to get stamped on every five seconds - but every weapon, power and armour set feels thoroughly playtested and laboured over. With matchmaking doing away with your level altogether for the sake of fairness it's down to your abilities as a player, which can be off-putting to people not wanting/being able to put the time in, although it does mean that you have access to just as many charged-up instant-kill moves as the next guy. Outside of multiplayer you'll take more notice of the little numbers popping off each enemy as you hit them; something that more eagle-eyed players will notice actually change colour if you're hitting an enemy's weak spot. Nine times out of ten this will be the head, but for certain boss encounters it can change, with one in particular being a rather large tank on Mars that you'll slow down and take out far faster by targeting its treads, rather than the massive cannon on top. Firing off some initial shots to see which part of any given enemy takes the most damage is something that we never did in Halo, opening up a great sense of teamwork when you figure out how to fell a sizeable creature by relaying to your Fireteam what and where to focus on.
