Sony isn't sitting out the next generation of video game consoles, so expect a PS5 to hit the marketplace sometime in the fourth quarter of 2020, probably in November. Sony decided to skip E3 once again, which means there isn't a ton of new information about their next entry in the PlayStation series, but some tidbits have been confirmed.

One of the biggest features the device will have at launch is backwards compatibility. Sony isn't messing around with this feature either; the company has revealed that the system will be backwards compatible with all previous PlayStation, PS2, PS3, & PS4 games. That effectively means the system will launch with a library consisting of 1,300+ games from the original PlayStation alone, many of which will play better on the new hardware.

More than that, the system will have cross-generational play, which means that a game started on the PS4 can be continued seamlessly on the PS5. In addition to this innovation, Sony is updating its popular virtual reality headset with the PSVR 2, and while there isn't much known about that yet, Sony has revealed several innovations made to the DualShock controller.

The updated controller will feature haptic feedback, Adaptive Triggers, 3D audio, new programmable pressure-sensitive back buttons, and the lightbar will be removed. Other improvements made to the system match those of its biggest competitor with 8K gaming, ray tracing, and an SSD storage system.
