9. Viola - Bayonetta 3

Mr Freeze
PlatinumGames

Like the previous instalments, Bayonetta 3 has the bombastic umbra witch battling godlike forces with an array of zany weaponry, kaiju-sized monsters, and demonic yo-yos.

To keep the gameplay fresh, the threequel has interludes, where the player controls Bayonetta's allies, her best friend, Jeanne, and her daughter, Viola. Jeanne's side-missions are a nice reprieve, since they focus on side-scrolling stealth gameplay, rather than the over-the-top antics of the main campaign.

However, things go downhill every time you play as Viola. You see, the key to defeating enemies in Bayonetta is to master Witch-Time. By dodging an attack at just the right moment, time slows down, allowing you to get in a slew of free hits.

However, Viola can only pull off Witch-Time by parrying. Unfortunately, parrys are hard to pull off (even by veteran players), especially when you're surrounded by a horde of baddies. If you mistime a parry, you'll be left vulnerable, allowing your foes to cut your heath down to nothing in seconds. Many players find this mechanic so frustrating, they'll skip Viola's parrying trials entirely, losing many handy upgrades in the process.
