4. The Grinding - Gotham Knights

Mr Freeze
WB Games Montreal

Based on the weak promos and glitchy demos, we suspected Gotham Knights was in trouble long before its release. But we didn't think it would turn out this bad! Nearly every aspect of Batman: Arkham's spiritual successor has regressed, whether it's the boss battles, story, character development, or customisation.

But nothing is as disappointing as the combat system, which is ironic, since it helped define the Batman: Arkham series in the first place. Because every enemy is a damage sponge, you need to grind like crazy to level up, turning every brawl into a borefest.

In the previous entries, you were excited when Batman got cornered by a group of thugs, since it was so satisfying to wail on them. But you dread such encounters this time around, (especially when you engage in that 30-minute long battle with Mr Freeze).

Ironically, the fighting mechanics in Gotham Knights had every reason to feel LESS repetitive than its predecessors, since you play as four different superheroes, each armed with a diverse range of skills. The fact a 14-year-old game like Batman: Arkham Asylum has vastly superior combat to its modern successor is truly baffling.
