5. Firewall Ultra

Suicide Squad
Sony

The writing was on the wall with Firewall Ultra all year.

Though the original game was a signature staple of the PSVR's library, serving as a tense, innovative Rainbow Six-like for virtual reality fans, this semi-sequel, semi-remake had red flags from the start. Not only did early trailers look choppy and unconvincing, but the world of VR had changed massively since the launch of the first Firewall.

Other multiplatform PSVR2 titles like Pavlov had since established the bar for shooting in the medium, featuring jaw-dropping visuals with the jump to Unreal Engine 5, as well as immersive weapon mechanics, including manual firing, moving and reloading. Firewall, with its aged visuals and more input-based controls, felt a generation behind from the get go.

It wasn't just fans that weren't convinced either. Sony itself seemingly tried to bury the game following its announcement, releasing little footage from the title across 2023 and, most damningly, omitting it altogether from a segment of a Playstation business presentation that highlighted the strength of the PSVR 2's upcoming portfolio of games.

Without a release date until a month before it released in August, the title dropped with no marketing push to mid review scores and even worse fan reception. Tragically, the studio behind the franchise, First Contact Entertainment, announced it was closing its doors a few months later.
