Given that Dead Island 2 spent almost a decade in protracted, hellish development - where it burned through three different dev teams - even the series' biggest fans would've been foolish to expect greatness from it.

And yet, there was a profound sentiment of surprise when the game finally hit stores last year, that with so much anti-hype in front of it, Dead Island 2 was actually... pretty good?

Though it hardly reinvented the wheel, there was something to be said for the game's shiny, ultra-gory, no-nonsense zombie-slaying action, while contained within a refreshingly modest semi-open world.

But it's also fair to say that expectations were so bleak pre-release that basic competence bought the end result a lot of goodwill, even if to some players, this is an aggressively simplistic experience that struggles to maintain interest across its roughly 15-hour story.

In the very least, most will agree that it's far from the disaster that seemed to be on the cards a few years back.
