9. The Infamous Nerf Patch - Diablo IV

Though Diablo IV launched to generally positive reviews, the player response since has been decidedly more polarising, and in particular, there was a volcanic outcry when Blizzard released their controversial 1.1.0 patch ahead of Season 1's long-awaited launch.

The patch severely nerfed players, reducing their damage and defense, in turn slowing levelling and effectively turning the game into a "slog," as many put it.

Fans were pissed, enough that a few weeks later Blizzard not only released a patch to walk back many of the nerfs, but flat-out admitted the prior patch was "bad," while assuring players they wouldn't attempt any such nerf ever again.

But in many respects the damage was already done - players felt burned enough to give the game negative reviews in droves on Steam, such that many months later it's still stuck in "Mixed" territory.

Opinion varies wildly on the state of Diablo IV today, but that nerf patch was a ridiculous, easily avoidable own-goal early on in the game's life.
