5. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis

Released back in 1999, only one year after its predecessor, Resident Evil 3 was both a critical and commercial success, selling approximately three million copies worldwide. Interestingly, it wasn’t actually intended to be the third instalment in the series. In fact, it was being developed as a spin-off, but due to time constraints and licensing issues, the game was repurposed, expanded significantly, and transformed into a fully-fledged sequel to Resi2.

In the game, players control Jill Valentine, a former STARS operative attempting to make her escape from Raccoon City, which has been overrun with legions of the undead. The majority of the game takes place prior to the events of Resident Evil 2, eventually running parallel to the previous game and overlapping in a handful of places. As well as being more action orientated, the game also introduced an array of new enemies, including the titular Nemesis, a terrifying adversary that would actively pursue the player throughout the game.

While Resident Evil 3 certainly wasn't as important as the original, nor as innovative as Resident Evil 2, it did bring a handful of new ideas to the table. At the time, it was criticised for its short length and muddled storytelling, but those issues don’t really come across. If anything, the game’s just guilty of being a little frustrating. For instance, the Nemesis is certainly a terrifying addition to the game, but it’s also remarkably irritating, popping up whenever it feels like it, pursuing the player from room to room, and generally being annoying as all hell.
