10 Resident Evil Games - Ranked From Worst To Best
6. Resident Evil Code: Veronica
Originally intended to be the third instalment in the
franchise, Resident Evil Code: Veronica was first released on the SEGA Dreamcast
in 2000. To this day, the game is considered one of the better entries in the
series, and has sold approximately four million copies worldwide. It was also
the first Resident Evil game to utilise real-time 3D environments instead of
pre-rendered backgrounds. An updated version of the game was later released on
GameCube, Xbox 360, and Playstation 3, entitled Code: Veronica X.
In the game, players take control of protagonist Claire Redfield as she continues her search for her missing brother, Chris. Kidnapped and imprisoned, Claire is left to fend for herself on a remote prison island somewhere in the South Pacific, while her brother battles long-time rival Albert Wesker in an isolated research facility in Antarctica. Eventually, the pair are united, and tasked with the prevention of a viral infection, orchestrated entirely by Wesker.
Praised universally by critics for its story and scope, Code: Veronica represented an impressive leap forward for the franchise. Unfortunately, the visuals haven’t aged splendidly since then, and while the pre-rendered backgrounds of earlier instalments can still be appreciated nostalgically, Code: Veronica just looks awful. It doesn’t ruin the experience, and the continued emphasis on survival more than makes up for it, but it sure is distracting.
