10 Retro FPS Games We Need On Consoles

If Doom and Dark Souls had a baby, it'd probably resemble Hexen or Heretic.

These games are hard, that's old school baby, but each one has a distinct look and style, bringing new gameplay features to each entry. Heretic 2 is actually a 3rd person hack-and-slash shooter hybrid, but it shouldn't be overlooked.

It's refreshing to see a retro shooter set in the world of dark fantasy rather than the usual sci-fi schlock. Given the popularity of games like Skyrim, Diablo, and the Warhammer franchise, as well as indie developers making spiritual successors like Amid Evil and Project Warlock, now feels like the perfect time to reintroduce folks to Heretic and Hexen.

Keep a close eye on the upcoming Graven, too.

Who knows, with enough love it might even spark a sequel; we can but dream. However, it's arguably the least approachable game for newcomers to the old school ways. But all the titles in the canon can be unfair difficulty-wise, and the level design can be a little obtuse.

Nonetheless, it's a challenge worth pursuing for those who dare.
