10 Ridiculous Arguments Against The Biggest Games Of 2013
2. The Last of Us Is Poorly Paced
The Last of Us is one of the best reviewed video games in history, and the happy recipient of countless Game of the Year awards, but that didn't mean it was perfect. One of the biggest complaints was that the ambling pace of some sections was simply too slow to be compelling or entertaining. The opening 3 or 4 hours have been particularly criticised as aimless, creating a wall of tedium that some players just didn't bother to continue with. Of course, this is ludicrous. While those opening hours are not the most intense or thrilling, they do something important, and that's immerse us in this world and allow us to get to know Joel and Ellie. The banter between the characters during these moments of calm are some of the most naturalistic and believable in any game I've ever played, and are important in the success of the emotional beats that show up later in the game. The Last of Us takes its time, that much is certain, but it is in the service of creating one of the most involving and engrossing worlds in gaming history. Patience is a virtue.
