5. Intellect Devourer

Most creatures seem to like getting others to work for them. Whether it’s slaves or a faithful companion, its good to have someone or something watching your back. The servants of Mind Flayers though, they’re in a league of their own. Take one brain, stick some legs on it and you have the Intellect Devourer.

These monstrosities are the result of a Mind Flayer doing strange rituals on their thralls’ brains. After this, the brains sprout legs and start their new life as hunters. The Intellect Devourer has some rather nasty abilities for a relatively low-level creature. Not only can it attack with its sharp claws but can also drain their prey of their brainpower. If targeted by the Devourer, a person’s intelligence can be reduced to that of your average root vegetable. What a horrible way for your party’s mage to go.

This creature can do something even worse than this though. If targets an unconscious player, it has the ability to take control of the person. It also knows everything that they know. The ability must have been the end of many unwary players. If the Intellect Devourer leaves the body and the brain of that character isn’t restored in One Minute, then they die. It may be quite a strong creature, but its hard not to laugh at a brain on legs.
