10 Ridiculous Ways Adverts Were Built Into Video Games

6. Street Fighter V's Ad-Emblazoned Characters

In early December 2018, Capcom announced that "Sponsored Content" would soon arrive in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, to remind players about "costumes, bundles, and the Capcom Pro Tour." When enabled, characters in the game would have ads seared onto their skin, gloves, and clothes, with additional ads appearing in loading screens and certain stages.

On the plus side, this setting could be turned on and off at will, and rewarded players who opted-in with additional in-game currency. On the downside, having characters splattered with logos for the Capcom Pro Tour looked absolutely horrible, and attempting to expose players to such blatant advertisements - in a game they had already paid full price for - was a scummy, greedy move on Capcom's part.

Needless to say, the Street Fighter community did not react positively to this new addition, and the ads were soon removed from the game entirely, with no word on whether or not they might return.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
