10 Most Ridiculously Over-The-Top Examples Of Gaming Censorship

8. Duke Nukem 64 (Nintendo 64)

Duke Nukem is a franchise that's all about being crude, vulgar and cheesy to the point of bad taste. Playing Duke's games was like being in your own awesomely terrible 1980s action movie full of aliens, drug abuse and silly one-liners. Removing any of these elements and the games lose a lot of their charm, as evidenced by the heavily censored Nintendo 64 version of Duke Nukem 3D. Duke's one-liners were toned down ("Die, you son of a bitch!" was replaced with "you're the disease and I'm the cure!"), sexual and religious themes were removed and steroids were replaced with vitamins. In the uncensored version, Duke encounters women trapped in alien pods that beg to be put out of their misery, giving the player the choice of killing them. In the Nintendo 64 version the women are silent and can't be killed. Instead, it's possible to save them from captivity. Duke Nukem 64 offers new weapons, superior graphics to other console versions as well as competitive and co-operative multi-player modes. Sadly Duke Nukem just isn't Duke Nukem without crass humour and scantily clad women.

When I'm not playing games, I'm probably either writing about them somewhere or singing stupid songs inspired by them. Or eating pizza.
