10 Most Ridiculously Over-The-Top Examples Of Gaming Censorship

3. South Park: The Stick Of Truth

Tired of third-parties spectacularly failing at making good South Park games (South Park Rally still gives us nightmares), series creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker decided to write and design one with the help of Obsidian. The end result of years of hard work is The Stick Of Truth - a fantastic RPG full of inside jokes and references to the show that will undoubtedly please hardcore fans. Unfortunately fans in PAL countries didn't get the pure South Park experience Matt and Trey intended. A total of 7 scenes were removed and replaced with descriptive text, including an anal probe mini-game that takes place on board an alien spaceship. Players have to mash buttons to destroy the probe with their unusually powerful sphincter. This is followed by several other censored mini-games that task you with pressing buttons in the right order to save Randy from getting probed. In a typically hilarious South Park twist, the button prompts soon flash up so quickly that they're impossible to memorise, resulting in poor Randy's sphincter getting another workout. Additionally a mini-game in which you give Randy an abortion in circumstances too damn bizarre to explain was also removed. This is referenced later on in the game and actually becomes an important (and hilarious) plot point. In the grand scheme of things censoring 7 scenes in a game that lasts over 10 hours doesn't sound like much, but the anal probe mini-games happen so close together that the censorship really gets in the way of Stick Of Truth's otherwise excellent pacing. It pulls you out of the experience and ruins the illusion of actually playing in an episode of South Park that Matt, Trey and Obsidian worked so hard to create.

When I'm not playing games, I'm probably either writing about them somewhere or singing stupid songs inspired by them. Or eating pizza.
