10 RPG Video Game Fates Worse Than Death
5. Becoming A Mindless Monster - Octopath Traveler
If this list hasn't made it clear enough already, being turned from a regular-old human into a terrifying monster is no picnic. You'd be hard-pressed to find any decent human being who is happy to become a bloodthirsty beast, and as such, this creature from the fantastic Octopath Traveler is mired in tragedy.
Redeye is the main antagonist of H'aanit's story and is a vile creature. Just looking at them gives you a sense of this monster's pure malice and hate. But they weren't always that way, as this monster was once a good man named Graham Crossford.
The unfortunate Crossford was turned into this beast at the hands of the villainous Lyblac. She convinced Graham she could revive his deceased wife but instead tricked him into becoming a vessel for Galdera.
While he managed to break free from this ritual before it was finished, his exposure to the dark god's essence morphed him into the terrifying killing machine, Redeye.
Graham's mind was completely gone, but he had moments of clarity, remembering his old life and seeing the chaos he had caused in his monster form. You can even find writings from him begging that someone end his life.
There are no bigger signs you've suffered a fate worse than death than dreaming of being mercy-killed.
