10 RPG Video Game Fates Worse Than Death
3. Turning Into A Tree - Fallout 3
If you thought being a door was bad enough, try going even further and becoming a tree, doomed to stay rooted forever, just like poor, poor Harold.
A nuclear wasteland is the kind of place so littered with suffering that you've got to work really hard to garner sympathy. But, of all the eccentric side characters in the Fallout series, this unfortunate man really does deserve your pity.
Harold was a human who lived inside a Vault during the Great War before venturing out into the post-apocalyptic wasteland and contracting the Forced Evolutionary Virus. The FEV slowly (and horrifyingly) transformed his body, forcing him to take root in the ground and become a tree.
As if that wasn't bad enough, it gets even worse, as Harold was entirely self-aware. He was stuck in one position, unable to eat, unable to sleep, and unable to die, leaving him in a perpetual state of agony.
Harold asks you to end his suffering when you stumble upon him in the game, which you really should do. Whether you do it painlessly or burn him alive, it's safe to say he's better off dead.
