10 Most Satisfying Conclusions In Gaming

1. Father & Son - Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots

The fourth and chronologically final game in the main Metal Gear Solid universe essentially defines the phrase "satisfying". No video game franchise has so eagerly and ambitiously given its fanbase as much closure as Guns of the Patriots did, with an ending cut-scene running close to 90-minutes in length (though thankfully, Hideo Kojima was smart enough to include the ability to pause cut-scenes this time). After Snake defeats Revolver Ocelot in the epic, final boss battle, we see the various plot-lines tied up: Meryl marries Johnny Sasaki, Raiden and Rose get back together, and Otacon decides to raise Sunny as a regular kid, even as she laments Snake's absence in their lives. But then the main event comes. Snake heads to a grave site with the intent of killing himself, and after a brief tease, we discover that he doesn't go through with it. He ends up being interrupted by the believed-to-be-dead Big Boss, who turns up with a vegetative Major Zero in a wheelchair. Big Boss explains many things to Snake, such as the nature of the Patriots and the schism that split them down the middle, as well as Ocelot using nanomachines to "become" Liquid. Big Boss switches off Zero's life support machine, and then informs Snake that the new FOXDIE injected into him by Drebin earlier on will kill him, due to it being engineered to kill any member of the old caste of the Patriots. However, due to it being limited to attack Boss' Patriots faction, Snake no longer has to worry about becoming a biological weapon, and can live out the rest of his life (shortened considerably by the effects of being a clone) in peace. Big Boss dies while urging Snake to spend what time he has left living rather than fighting, something he seems to take to heart as he speaks to Otacon. The ending may be indulgent and ridiculously long, but it's the ending MGS fans deserved, giving Snake a fitting swansong that's hopeful yet tragic at the same time. Fantastic.
