They're the scariest areas that have ever been featured in the Souls series.

Starting with the launch of the original Demon’s Souls all the way back in 2009, FromSoftware’s Souls series has become notorious for its brutal difficulty – and for good reason. Thanks to its punishingly tough challenges, players can expect to see the “You Died” screen a lot. And it’ll mostly be due to their own careless mistakes.

However, anyone who’s played the Souls series can also attest that there’s much more to love about these games than its difficulty alone. From genius interconnected level design, deep lore scattered in every crevice, epic boss battles, and a heart-pounding score that carries you through your epic journey, there's plenty to adore about Souls.

Another distinguishing characteristic about the series is its delightfully macabre aesthetic. Set in crumbling worlds on the brink of collapse and crawling with horrifying monstrosities, series creator Hidetaka Miyazaki has threaded a distinct horror flavour throughout his works, one which has captured the imaginations of millions.

Consequently, there are plenty of unpleasant and downright terrifying locations that players will explore within these games.

While other "Soulsborne" titles Bloodborne and Sekiro have their own fair share of nightmarish settings, this list will only be concentrating on the Souls series.

10. Dark Souls - Tomb Of The Giants

Found within the depths of the catacombs of Lordran in Dark Souls, the Tomb of Giants can be accessed after defeating Pinwheel (the easiest step in reaching this area). A pitch-black maze of dead ends, sudden pitfalls, and giant skeletons waiting to jump out at you from the darkness, it’s easy to see why this area kicks off this list.

In fact, this is the only thing you’ll easily be able to see about this area because of how ridiculously dark it is. Without using magic to light your way or grabbing the essential lantern later in this area (or, even better, the Sunlight Maggot from Lost Izalith), you’ll struggle to see anything at all. If you don’t know where you’re going you’ll be more likely to run off an edge or into a horde of enemies than find the exit.

The darkness is oppressive and suffocating. You have no idea what lies ahead just out of your view, which keeps you on constant edge. And all of this leads you to facing Nito, one of the most powerful and monstrous bosses in the game.
