4. Bioshock Infinite - Colmstock House
This may not come as a massive surprise to anyone familiar with the Bioshock games, but nothing in Infinite really gave off a horror vibe.
From the outset, it was certainly brighter and more colourful, with the merest hints of darker goings on beneath the surface. Time travel and predestination are the main themes here, which don't necessarily lead themselves to outright horror.
Yet it's when Booker has to travel to Father Comstock's derelict house that the narrative takes a turn on dark and spooky street.
Littered with statuesque figures, things immediately feel eerie the moment you walk through the door. Enemies wearing expressionless George Washington heads or what look like gramophone tubes is never going to end well...
Dubbed the Boys of Silence, the latter will awaken the former to attack Booker if alerted, but that's not the scariest part.
No, that comes in the unsuspected guise of activating a lever... which we've done loads of times, right? Until you turn around and jump as one of the buggers has crept up on you.
It's unavoidable, unexpected and unnerving. Bravo, Bioshock Infinite, you got us on that one.
