10 Scariest Water Levels In Video Games

9. The Hydrus - Shadow Of The Colossus

Shadow of the Colossus has plenty of incredible beasts and though it can be haunting, it’s certainly not a horror game. That’s not to say there isn’t a certain colossi that won’t absolutely freak you out if you’re not a fan of water.

Your encounter with the seventh colossi, Hydrus, doesn’t kick off until you sum up the courage to throw yourself into an enormous and seemingly bottomless body of water. The game has already made you keenly across the sensation of feeling very small within wide open areas and against gargantuan foes, but sticking you in the water where you’re far slower against a foe that’s pretty damn cosy there, is a whole other matter.

The eel-like Hydrus also comes complete with electrified protrusions on his back that will do you some nasty damage if you get too close.

In order to take this thing out you’ll have to chase it, climb aboard, and try not to drown as it drags you deep underwater and you’re forced to watch Wander struggle for breath and try to make it back to the surface. You also never have a concept of just how deep the water goes and occasionally you’ll lose your enormous target, but you know it’s in the water with you, which is significantly uncool.

Some of the colossi after this one are definitely more difficult, but at least you’ll be glad to have your feet on dry land.
