Halo: Combat Evolved is one of the most important video games of the 21st century. It almost singlehandedly established Microsoft as a console rival to Sony and Nintendo, being the initial entry in the franchise that re-defined the multiplayer experience for the next generation of gaming. It remains a beloved figure of early 2000s gaming, with a remastered version being played regularly today as part of the Master Chief Collection.

However, while this game is a classic and still monumental to this day, it is not the greatest entry in the Halo franchise. In fact, there are many options for the Halo series in terms of building off of the foundations of the original game. Halo 2 is beloved by many for its online multiplayer, the prequel Halo Reach is widely regarded as one of the best games of its generation, but the best entry has to be Halo 3.

Halo 3 builds off of the wonderful online multiplayer of Halo 2 and synthesises it with masterful storytelling in the campaign, creating a game that has immense value in both its online mechanics and its narrative. It personifies everything that Bungie aimed for with Combat Evolved, creating a truly special gaming experience.
