When Hidetaka Miyazaki, the creator of Bloodborne and the Dark Souls series was a kid, he loved to read books beyond his reading skill. Even when he couldn’t understand the books in their entirety, he kept reading them. As he couldn’t make heads or tails of what he read, he used his imagination to fill in the gaps and created new stories different than the ones that were actually being told.

He found this way of reading as more engaging because it fueled his imagination. When he was working on Bloodborne, and later the Dark Souls series, he wanted the players to go through the same experience. As such, the storylines in Bloodborne and Dark Souls were intentionally made hazy.

By omitting parts of the storylines, he wanted the players to fill in the gaps using their own imagination. He believe that it'd make players feel more engaged with the games and also make each player experiences them differently.
