Dark Souls is known primarily for two things: it's notorious difficulty and it's richly detailed world-building.

However, if you want to uncover any of the game's lore or complete any side quests, they'll need to do most of the groundwork themselves because this game is more concerned with killing you repeatedly than giving helpful quest markers.

Arguably the best (and most tragic) of all the hidden plot lines is also the trickiest to complete: saving Solaire of Astora.

A jolly knight about to embark on his own quest, you'll first encounter this gloriously incandescent Sunlight Warrior after defeating the first main boss. To continue his quest, you'll need to talk to him again at bonfires at Anor Londo, the Sunlight Alter, then Lost Izalith, where he'll gradually become more pessimistic about his quest.

Progressing normally, however, the next encounter with Solaire will be a fight as he's been corrupted by a parasite. To save him, players must have achieved a certain level in a hidden covenant to unlock a secret door needed to find and kill the parasite.

Saving Solaire will then allow you to summon him for the final boss fight, giving him the redemption he deserves.
