10 Seemingly Pointless Video Game Choices That Have Surprising Consequences

7. A Tiny Jar Determines Whether You Win Or Lose - Space Quest IV

Space Quest is one of the classic Sierra Entertainment point-and-click series. Its tongue-in-cheek humor and retro charm have earned it a ton of fans over the years; however, at the same time, the games can be absolutely ruthless when it comes to making mistakes.

So much so that even a tiny decision can either determine if you win or lose your entire playthrough, as evidenced by the infamous jar choice in Space Quest IV.

In Space Quest IV, the player is able to fully softlock themselves out of finishing the game by incorrectly using one seemingly unimportant item.

Early in the game, the main character, Roger Wilco, finds an empty jar that he can fill up with random substances in the game. There are many things you can try putting inside, but what the game secretly expects you to do is scrape up some acid at the start of the game.

Though nothing indicates the choice is important, if you didn't pick up the acid, you will not be able to dissolve the door in the final stage of the game.

It's a small decision, but you'll appreciate making it when you realize you don't have to backtrack all the way to the beginning after hours of playing.
