10 SEGA Mega Drive Games That Deserve a 21st Century Overhaul

7. Ghosts 'n Goblins (Genre: Action RPG)

Ghosts 'n Goblins has been around since 1988 and still remains one of the hardest games in existence. In almost every sense, this game inspired the likes of the Souls series. It wasn't just that the levels were so jam-packed full of demonic enemies bent on killing you – it was that you could only get hit twice before you were killed.

Furthermore, the game sort of revolutionised new game plus. After finishing levels 1-5 once, you were simply transported back to the beginning to do it all over again. A second finish would see you take on a sixth level and finally reach the true ending, but was it really worth the broken controllers and popping veins along the way?

As games like Bloodborne and Nioh win huge commercial success, it is clear that there is a refreshing demand for challenging games that require patience, careful planning, and trial-and-error. While the fast-paced original would need to be toned down a bit, the armour of King Arthur, the demonic enemies, and the unforgiving environment – all upgraded with a modern engine and given an RPG overhaul – could see this classic series make a welcome return.
